Interrupted sleep at night is not only annoying, it can also be your body’s way of sending messages. Experts say that there may be both physiological and psychological reasons behind waking up frequently at certain times.

Waking up between 9 and 11 pm: A sign of stress
Waking up during this time may indicate that you have recent or ongoing high stress levels. Psychology experts recommend that you rest more often and practice relaxation techniques.

11pm to 1am: Emotional distress
Waking up during this period is associated with serious emotional problems. It is also stated that there may be a physiological reason, as the gallbladder is thought to be active during this time. Positive thoughts and positive approaches will be beneficial in this case.

Night 1 to 3: Hidden anger
Waking up during this time zone usually indicates the presence of repressed anger. According to Chinese natural philosophy, the increase in energy in the liver meridian during these hours is explained by the excess of 'yang' energy.

From 3 to 5 a.m.: Sadness and spiritual communication
Waking up at this time can indicate a feeling of sadness and related to the lungs. <media:keywords>What is Spravato, how does Spravato work, what psychiatric conditions can Spravato treat, what are the side effects of Spravato</media:keywords>

The FDA has taken a historic step by approving Spravato (esketamine nasal spray) for standalone use in treating major depressive disorder (MDD) and related psychiatric disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This approval marks a major shift in treatment options, particularly for patients who have not responded to conventional therapies.

Previously approved only with oral antidepressants
Until now, Spravato was only approved for use alongside traditional oral antidepressants. With this latest decision, the FDA has allowed Spravato to be prescribed and administered on its own, a milestone that could change the treatment landscape for those with severe, treatment-resistant depression.

Mechanism and safety profile of esketamine
Spravato contains esketamine, a derivative of the anesthetic ketamine. This innovative treatment targets the brain’s glutamate pathway, which plays a key role in mood regulation. Although the exact mechanism is not fully understood, ketamine-based therapies have shown significant promise in rapidly relieving depression symptoms. According to the FDA, the safety profile of standalone Spravato is consistent with previous data from combined treatments.

Clinical trial data and findings
The FDA’s approval followed an in-depth review of clinical trial data. Results showed that 22.5% of patients who received Spravato experienced notable improvement in depressive symptoms, compared to just 7.6% in the placebo group. The agency confirmed that no significant new safety concerns emerged, and the findings aligned with previous research.

Administration process and side effects
Spravato will be administered under professional supervision in clinical settings, where patients will be monitored for a short period after treatment. Reported side effects include temporary nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. Patients are advised not to drive themselves home after treatment. Other possible side effects include short-term increases in blood pressure, confusion, and bladder issues.

<media:keywords>What organs and tissues can be donated, how many people donate their bodies to science each year, what happens to a donated body, what is body donation used for</media:keywords>

Many people choose to donate their organs and tissues for research after death. According to the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, eight vital organs can be donated: heart, kidneys (both), pancreas, lungs (both), liver, intestines, hands (both), and face. In addition to these, tissues such as heart valves, corneas, blood, and stem cells can also be donated.

More than 20,000 full body donations annually
In the United States, more than 20,000 people donate their entire bodies to scientific research every year. But what exactly happens to these bodies once they are donated?

The Body Donation Process
There are specific criteria that must be met for a donated body to be accepted. Pamela White, from Newcastle University’s Body Donation Program, explains that unlike organ donation, the age of the donor is not a key factor. However, the cause of death and the donor’s health condition can influence acceptance. "Factors such as infectious diseases, respiratory conditions, or other health issues are critical," White says.

Donors must also meet weight and health requirements — typically, donors around 80-90 kg are accepted. Once approved, the body is collected by funeral directors, and the embalming process begins. At Newcastle University, bodies are stored in cold rooms for six to eight weeks before being used in medical training.

Uses of Donated Bodies
The research applications for donated bodies are wide-ranging. They are often used in anatomy education, surgical training, or new medical technique development. In some cases, donated bodies are even used in automotive crash tests to improve vehicle safety standards. Medical students gain valuable hands-on experience by studying these bodies in detail.

Isobel Duckling from Newcastle University highlights that donors can choose how long their bodies may be used. Some donors permit indefinite use, while others request that their remains be returned to their families after a certain period. Throughout the process, donated bodies are handled with strict ethical oversight and constant supervision.

Choosing the Right Donation Service
In the U.S., most body donation programs are not linked to nonprofit organizations. Furthermore, not all programs offer donors control over how long their bodies will be retained. Minimal legal oversight makes it essential for donors to carefully choose reputable programs. Experts note that some individuals opt for body donation to alleviate funeral expenses. White emphasizes that donating one’s body to science is an extraordinary act of generosity, contributing to future generations’ medical and scientific advancements.

<media:keywords>What is periodic cooking, how does periodic cooking work, what are the benefits of periodic cooking, can periodic cooking be used for other foods</media:keywords>

Cooking an egg might seem simple, but achieving the perfect texture and flavor can be surprisingly tricky. To solve this culinary challenge, researchers at the Italian National Research Council’s Institute of Polymers, Composites, and Biomaterials have developed a new technique known as "Periodic Cooking."

The science behind egg cooking temperatures
Eggs require two distinct temperatures to cook properly. Egg yolks begin to set at 65°C, while egg whites require 85°C to fully solidify. This temperature gap often makes it difficult to achieve the perfect balance between a tender yolk and a properly cooked white.

Limitations of sous vide cooking
Sous vide — a popular method among chefs — involves sealing eggs in vacuum bags and cooking them at low temperatures (60-70°C) in a water bath for extended periods. However, this technique can leave egg whites only partially set, since only one protein type coagulates at these lower temperatures. Moreover, sous vide cooking can reduce the nutritional content of eggs.

Periodic Cooking: Method and advantages
The researchers’ periodic cooking method involves alternating the eggs between boiling water (100°C) for 2 minutes and cold water (30°C) for 2 minutes, repeating the cycle for a total of 32 minutes. According to the research team, this alternating process results in a perfectly tender yolk and fully set, yet soft, egg whites. The technique also helps retain both flavor and nutrients.

Nutritional and chemical benefits
Analyzing the nutritional content of eggs cooked using this method, scientists found that periodic cooking preserved higher levels of essential nutrients, including beneficial polyphenols. This makes the method particularly attractive for health-conscious consumers.

Applications beyond eggs
The researchers believe periodic cooking could be applied to a wide range of foods beyond eggs, helping to enhance both texture and nutritional value. The alternating heat-transfer process offers potential applications in cooking vegetables, meats, and other delicate ingredients that benefit from precise temperature control.

<media:keywords>How many mutations does each cell have by middle age, how do genetic errors accumulate over time, can genetic mutations trigger diseases, how do new technologies help detect mutations</media:keywords>

The human body is essentially a massive mosaic made up of cells, each containing unique genetic errors. By the time we reach middle age, every cell in our body can hold hundreds of genetic typos. Scientists are increasingly focused on understanding how these mutations accumulate and how they may influence aging and disease.

Accumulation of Genetic Errors
The very first cell you started from was created by combining the DNA from your biological parents. From that moment, every time a cell divides, it introduces new genetic errors. According to Phil H. Jones, a cancer biologist at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in the UK, these errors gradually build up over a lifetime. Thanks to cutting-edge technology, scientists can now detect even the tiniest of these mutations. While most are harmless, some can lead to health problems.

The Diversity of the Cellular Mosaic
By middle age, scientists estimate that each cell in the body contains roughly 1,000 genetic mutations. These can be found in the blood, skin, brain, and other tissues. However, not all mutations are harmful. In fact, some mutations may even be beneficial, potentially helping protect against diseases like cancer.

Aging and Genetic Mutations
Scientists increasingly believe that a significant part of aging may be linked to the lifelong accumulation of genetic errors. Since the 1970s, researchers have studied how mutations in somatic (non-reproductive) cells contribute to aging and disease. However, the exact connection between these mutations and the aging process remains incompletely understood.

New Technologies and the Discovery of Mutations
Thanks to recent advances, scientists can now detect mutations within individual cells. Siddharta Jaiswal, a stem cell biologist at Stanford University, emphasizes that these technological breakthroughs are crucial for understanding how mutations accumulate over time. Recent studies have found that mutations in blood cells increase with age, and in some cases, these mutations contribute to cancers and other blood disorders.

Do Mutations Trigger Cancer?
While most mutations are harmless, some directly trigger cancer or other serious illnesses. However, the body also develops defense mechanisms to manage and contain these genetic errors. As Phil Jones puts it: "It’s a small miracle that we function so well despite all these mutations."

Somatic Mutations and the Brain
Because brain cells stop dividing shortly after birth, the brain was long thought to be relatively protected from genetic damage. However, recent studies suggest that brain cells can also accumulate mutations over time. This process has been linked to neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, further highlighting the complex relationship between genetic mutations and long-term health.
