CHP Leader Özgür Özel: 'Let's Leave Polarization Behind in Ramadan'

A Call for Unity During Ramadan
Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Özgür Özel attended an iftar program in Etimesgut, Ankara, alongside Etimesgut Mayor Erdal Beşikçioğlu and Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş. During his speech, Özel urged a move away from political polarization, highlighting Ramadan as a time for solidarity and sharing. "In this blessed month, we should at least soften political debates around the iftar table," he stated, advocating for a more harmonious political discourse.

Focus on Palestine: 'We Need the Courage of 1974'
Özel also spoke about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine, drawing attention to the thousands of Palestinian lives lost due to Israeli attacks. He emphasized the need for Turkey to take a stronger and clearer stance on the matter. Referring to the courage shown by Turkish leaders during the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation in the face of external threats, Özel said, "In those times, despite the threats, necessary actions were taken. Today, we need the same determination."

Economic Crisis and Retiree Pensions
Touching on the current economic difficulties, Özel discussed the sharp decline in retirees' purchasing power. He compared the purchasing power of the lowest pension in 2002, which could buy 8 quarter gold coins, to the current amount, which can only purchase 2.5 quarter gold coins. He also pointed out the significant increase in Ramadan food package prices compared to last year, underlining the economic hardships faced by citizens. "Our municipalities are working hard to help citizens during Ramadan," Özel said, highlighting the importance of local government support for social assistance during these challenging times.

Solidarity and Support for Citizens
Özel concluded by stressing the importance of solidarity during these difficult times. "We must come together and support each other in these tough days," he added, reinforcing the significance of social aid provided by municipalities to help those in need.
