CHP’s Ömer Fethi Gürer: 'Wrong Agricultural Policies Have Sent Bread Prices Soaring'
CHP Niğde MP Ömer Fethi Gürer stated that bread and pide prices have skyrocketed in recent years. Emphasizing that import-oriented agricultural policies harm domestic production, Gürer called for support for farmers and bakers.
CHP Niğde MP and Member of the Agriculture, Forestry, and Village Affairs Commission Ömer Fethi Gürer pointed out that the government’s flawed agricultural policies, reliance on imports, and rising input costs are the main reasons behind the increasing bread prices. Gürer noted that in 2018, bread was priced at 1.25 TL, but in 2025, it has risen to 12.50 TL, while pide prices have increased from 2 TL to 20 TL.
‘Citizens Are Cutting Back on Bread’
Gürer emphasized that the rise in bread prices has hit low-income citizens the hardest, stating, "The poor had at least their daily bread, but now they are forced to reduce even that due to soaring prices."
He also underlined the challenges faced by bakers, who are struggling with rising costs: "The price of flour has gone up. Salt, yeast, sesame, rent, labor, transportation, natural gas, electricity, and fuel costs have all increased. How are bakers supposed to survive under these conditions?" Gürer asked.
‘Imports Are Hurting Domestic Production’
Gürer pointed out that Turkey imports an average of 10 million tons of wheat annually. He criticized the Turkish Grain Board (TMO) for becoming an import-oriented institution instead of supporting local farmers.
He further noted that wheat imports from Russia and Ukraine have harmed domestic producers: "Turkey is capable of growing its own wheat, but farmers do not receive sufficient support."
‘Local Farmers Must Be Protected’
Discussing the ongoing issues in wheat production, Gürer referred to TURKSTAT (TÜİK) data, which shows a 1.2 million-ton decrease in production last year. He emphasized that while Turkey produces 20-22 million tons of wheat annually, this is still insufficient. "Farmers are struggling to make a profit, while industrialists and importers are making money," he said.
‘Support Should Be Provided for Farmers and Bakers’
To reduce bread prices, Gürer urged the government to support farmers and ensure affordable flour for bakers. "Agricultural subsidies must begin even before production, and farmers' purchasing prices should be set according to costs and inflation. The Turkish Grain Board should provide subsidies for wheat to support bakers," he concluded.
