RTÜK fined some channels for broadcasting against İmamoğlu

The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has imposed penalties on some television channels due to broadcasts regarding the investigation into Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. According to data shared by RTÜK member İlhan Taşcı, various penalties were imposed on NOW TV, Tele 1, Halk TV and Sözcü TV due to broadcasts regarding the detention decision for İmamoğlu.
 
 
Penalties Given
All four channels were fined 3 percent. In addition, Sözcü TV and Halk TV were also given a program suspension penalty. These decisions were made on the grounds that the channels' broadcasts were against the rules set by RTÜK.
 
Statements of the RTÜK President
RTÜK President Ebubekir Şahin stated that channels should broadcast only by taking into account the statements of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and other official institutions. Şahin emphasized that this principle is a requirement of the rule of law and that news anchors and program commentators should not broadcast with their personal political views.
 
Procedural Violations
İlhan Taşcı claimed that RTÜK President Şahin had delivered the reports to the board members only 20 minutes before the legal deadline of 24 hours. It was also stated that some members of the upper board did not attend the meetings, believing that the reports were against procedure and the law.
 
Provisions of the Law
Reminding that RTÜK will impose maximum penalties on broadcasting organizations that broadcast in violation of legal regulations, Şahin called on all media organizations to present impartial and accurate news.
