Aftershocks After 6.2-magnitude Earthquake in the Sea of Marmara: Istanbul Shook All Day
Aftershocks continue in the Marmara Sea following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Silivri. Five more earthquakes, the largest of which was 4.9, were recorded. Aftershocks, especially those off the coast of Büyükçekmece, caused uneasiness in Istanbul.
Aftershocks continue after Silivri-centered earthquake
Aftershocks continue to be recorded in the region following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Silivri in the Sea of Marmara at 12:49 on April 23, 2025. According to Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and AFAD data, the epicenter of the earthquake was off the coast of Silivri, and the tremor was felt in Istanbul and many surrounding cities.
Aftershocks intensified off the coast of Büyükçekmece
Following the main earthquake, 5 more aftershocks occurred in different parts of the Sea of Marmara in the space of about an hour. The magnitudes of the earthquakes ranged from 3.9 to 4.9, and it was observed that they were particularly concentrated off the coast of Büyükçekmece district. Time: 12.13.05 – 3.9 magnitude, 6.99 km deep, Marmara Sea – 25.54 km Silivri (Istanbul)
Experts say aftershocks could continue
Earthquake experts emphasized that these aftershocks, which came after the 6.2 magnitude main tremor, were normal, but that their magnitudes should be taken seriously by citizens. It was stated that aftershocks could last for a few more days and that people should be prepared for sudden tremors.
Istanbulites are anxious
Citizens living on the coastline in particular experienced great anxiety due to the tremors that began in the early hours of the day. While many people shared their moments of panic on social media, some citizens stated that they were planning to spend the night outside.
Information and warnings from authorities continue
All relevant institutions, especially AFAD and the Governor's Office, are closely following the developments. While damage assessment studies on the field regarding the earthquakes continue, citizens are advised not to stay in buildings for long periods until a new statement is made.
