In the 1977 elections, Öymen was elected as Ankara deputy from the Republican People's Party and served as Minister of Tourism and Promotion in the short -term Ecevit government.
After the CHP remained outside the Turkish Grand National Assembly in the 1999 general elections, Altan Öymen became the new leader of the party.
Returning to the world of media after politics, Öymen continued to write in various newspapers and commented on television programs.
