Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç: 'Turkey Aims to Leave 40 Years of Terror Behind'

A Strong Stand Against Terrorism
Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç spoke on CNN Türk, emphasizing Turkey's commitment to combating terrorism and the goal of leaving the country's 40-year-long terror issue behind. He noted that the state has taken decisive action in fighting terror, with the full disarmament of terrorist organizations being a key priority. "There may be those who want to drag our country back to the dark days, and we must remain vigilant," Tunç added.

28 February Process and Victims
Tunç also highlighted the injustices of the 28 February process, which he described as a "postmodern coup." He shared important statistics regarding the consequences of the 28 February period, pointing out that 600,000 students were deprived of their right to education due to the headscarf ban, 11,000 teachers were forced to resign, and many military personnel were dismissed. "Turkey has moved past its history of coups and entered a new era of fighting against coup-makers," Tunç said.

Judicial Reform and Trust
Reacting to reports showing Turkey’s low rankings in judicial trust indices, Tunç criticized the lack of objective criteria in these assessments. He reaffirmed that judicial reforms are ongoing to strengthen the country's democracy, stating, "We have implemented numerous structural reforms to ensure the independence and impartiality of the judiciary."

Changes in Criminal Justice System
Tunç announced that changes to the criminal justice system are on the agenda, particularly the possibility of easing the detention ban for crimes with sentences under two years. He also mentioned that penalties for the use of firearms in populated areas would be increased and efforts to eliminate impunity would be pursued.

Tackling Cybercrime
Minister Tunç spoke about the increasing prevalence of cybercrimes and the new measures that will be introduced to combat them. He pointed out that stricter regulations would be implemented to fight phone scams, illegal betting, and cybercrimes, and that foreign nationals' ability to purchase GSM lines in Turkey would be more tightly controlled. Additionally, the introduction of mandatory facial recognition systems in ATMs was also on the agenda.

Expanding Probation System
Tunç also noted that there have been numerous requests from citizens regarding the expanded use of the probation system, which was first implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. He confirmed that a draft proposal is being prepared and will be submitted to Parliament for consideration.
