Maternal Mortality Rate in Türkiye Drops to Historical Level: 11.5 per 100,000
The maternal mortality rate in Türkiye has fallen to 11.5 per 100,000 live births, the lowest level ever recorded. Türkiye, which had fallen below the United Nations' 2030 target long before, has also achieved declines in infant and under-five mortality rates.
Türkiye achieves significant success in maternal mortality rate
Türkiye has recorded a historic improvement in the maternal mortality rate, one of the most important indicators reflecting developments in the field of health. According to 2024 data, the maternal mortality rate has decreased to 11.5 per hundred thousand live births, reaching its lowest level to date.
The decline has been steady since 2005
The maternal mortality rate, which was determined as 28.5 per hundred thousand live births in 2005, decreased to 14.5 in 2017 and 13.5 in 2023. The rate of 11.5, which was finally announced in 2024, clearly demonstrated Türkiye's progress in this area.
Maternal mortality rate is a critical indicator of the strength of the health system
The maternal mortality rate is calculated by multiplying the number of women who die during pregnancy or after birth due to pregnancy-related causes by the number of live births in the same year by 100,000. This rate is considered a basic indicator for measuring the accessibility and quality of health services.
Türkiye meets UN targets years ahead
The United Nations' goal of reducing the maternal mortality rate to less than 70 per 100,000 births by 2030 was achieved by Turkey in the mid-2000s. With this achievement, Türkiye has become one of the most successful countries in the world in reducing maternal mortality.
Infant and under-five mortality rates also declined
According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) data, the infant mortality rate also declined. The rate, which was 10.1 per thousand in 2023, dropped to 9.0 per thousand in 2024. The number of infant deaths decreased from 9,731 to 8,475 in the same period. The under-five mortality rate decreased from 14.7 per thousand to 11.1 per thousand.
