Müsavat Dervişoğlu: 'Turkey no longer appears to be a democratic state of law'

İYİ Party leader met with reporters at iftar
İYİ Party Chairperson Müsavat Dervişoğlu hosted an iftar dinner in Ankara with parliamentary reporters. Recalling his previous terms in the parliament, Dervişoğlu described the relationship he built with the press as 'one of the greatest achievements of my life.'

'A country where journalists are jailed cannot be a state of law'
Criticizing the growing pressure on journalists, Dervişoğlu said, 'Even in war zones, journalists are granted tolerance. Today, however, we see them being detained and imprisoned.' Referring to recent legal processes in Istanbul, he called them 'a judicial scandal.'

'This system harms everyone'
Dervişoğlu harshly criticized Turkey’s presidential system, stating, 'This system legitimizes collective injustice. The root of Turkey’s problems lies in the system itself.' He argued that the current structure has weakened institutions and pushed politics to become overly personalized.

'Youth are the source of hope'
Touching on recent student protests, Dervişoğlu praised the youth’s responsible stance and said, 'Turkish youth have shown that they are capable of defending the republic entrusted to them.'

Plans to visit Ekrem İmamoğlu in prison
Speaking on the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, Dervişoğlu confirmed that he plans to visit him in prison. 'We’ll arrange the visit with the prosecutor’s office. But I don’t want to interfere with family visits during the holiday period,' he said.

'The President chooses his own rivals'
Dervişoğlu also commented on the political climate and election processes, claiming that 'the President handpicks his opponents.' Regarding allegations of a possible trustee appointment to the CHP, he stated that the situation cannot be compared with the internal conflicts previously experienced in the MHP.

'We insist on returning to the parliamentary system'
Reiterating his party’s stance on system change, Dervişoğlu said, 'Even Erdoğan has been transformed by this system. We remain committed to restoring the parliamentary democratic system.'

'I will not bow to threats'
Addressing the threats he recently received, Dervişoğlu stated, 'Yes, I’ve been threatened, but I didn’t report anyone. We want justice to function. Politics cannot be conducted through fear or blackmail.'
