Azerbaijani, Pakistani leaders meet in critical meeting in Lachin
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif held an extended meeting at a luncheon held after the opening of Lachin International Airport. Strategic relations between the two countries were discussed during the meeting.
Lachin International Airport opened
The official opening ceremony of Lachin International Airport was held on May 28, 2025. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the ceremony. The new airport is of strategic importance in terms of strengthening the transportation network in the Karabakh region.
Azerbaijani and Pakistani delegations meet for extended talks
Following the opening ceremony, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif met for lunch in Lachin. The meeting was held in an expanded format with the participation of high-level delegations from both countries.
The current status and future of Azerbaijan-Pakistan relations were discussed during the meeting. It was reported that cooperation issues, especially in the fields of defense industry, energy and infrastructure, were evaluated in detail. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional security issues.
Intense diplomatic traffic due to Independence Day
The meeting coincided with a period of increased international diplomatic contacts due to Azerbaijan’s May 28 Independence Day. In this context, congratulatory messages were conveyed to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev from the leaders of Portugal, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Algeria, Georgia, Hungary, Poland, Albania, Switzerland, Sudan and Lithuania.
