CHP member Gamze Taşcıer: "We die while working, we crawl when we retire"

CHP Deputy Chairman and Labor Offices Coordinator Gamze Taşcıer reacted to AKP's Nihat Zeybekçi's statements that "the retirement age should be increased" with a written press release.

In his statement, Taşcıer reminded that the retirement age in Turkey had already been raised significantly with the 1999 and 2008 regulations.

“Türkiye is not an early retirement paradise”

Taşcıer emphasized that Turkey's legal retirement age is very close to the OECD average and said, "Türkiye is not an early retirement paradise."

“The real problem is insecure work and low wages”

CHP's Taşcıer said that the main problems in Turkey are low wages, widespread informality and insufficient public contribution.

“Workers are being dragged into retirement in their graves”

Taşcıer emphasized that many workers cannot work until their 60s due to harsh working conditions, and that work accidents and health problems tear workers out of the workforce at an early age.

Referring to the Social Security Institution (SGK) data, Taşcıer drew attention to the extent of work accidents: "During the AKP government, there were 30 work accidents per hour, 650 per day, 5 thousand per week, 21 thousand 772 per month. In 23 years, the job loss of workers exceeded 1 billion hours."

“Pensioners live below the hunger line”

Taşcıer reminded that the majority of retirees are struggling to survive with income below the hunger line.

“The problem is not the age, but the government's view of the worker”

Taşcıer: "The real problem in Turkey is not the low retirement age, but insecure work, widespread unemployment and poverty-stricken pensions."
