CHP Şanlıurfa Deputy Mahmut Tanal: 'The fate of the youth cannot be handed over to the bride price'
CHP Şanlıurfa Deputy Lawyer Mahmut Tanal, in his speech at the TBMM General Assembly, said that bride price and similar traditional practices constitute a major obstacle to marriage for young people in the region. Tanal, who said, “Young people marry into debt and then are left alone with despair,” called on the government to take urgent measures.
Speaking outside the agenda at the Turkish Grand National Assembly, CHP Şanlıurfa Deputy Av. Mahmut Tanal stated that young people who want to get married in the region, especially in Şanlıurfa, face economic pressures. Tanal stated that traditional practices such as bride price, dowry, and milk money are causing social and economic collapse.
'Young people are getting married with debt, families are collapsing'
Tanal summarized the situation in his speech with the following words: “In Şanlıurfa and our region, young people who want to get married face economic burdens such as bride price, dowry, and milk money. Young people are getting married with debt, and families are experiencing economic collapse.”
'The constitution is clear: It is the duty of the state to protect the family'
Stating that the state cannot remain indifferent to the issue, Tanal said, “Article 41 of the Constitution considers the protection of the family as the duty of the state. The state cannot remain a spectator to this system, the fate of the young cannot and should not be handed over to the bride price.”
'Young people want to get married but the crisis is preventing them'
Tanal also touched upon the President's question to the youth, "Why can't you get married?" and said, "Young people can't get married due to economic crises. If a young person wants to start a family in this country, they first face debt and then desperation."
‘Ministrials should take precautions together’
CHP's Tanal called on the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, saying, "Effective measures should be developed together on this issue."
'We remember with mercy'
At the end of his speech, Tanal also remembered the late artist Sırrı Elitaş and said, "If the late Sırrı was my brother, he would still be making Türkiye laugh today. May he rest in peace."
