In his statement after being detained in the morning hours, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu criticized the injustices against him and the deficiencies in the judicial system, and emphasized that the will of the people must be upheld. İmamoğlu also made harsh calls to the government and the judiciary.
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, in his statement after being detained yesterday morning, took a strong stance against the unlawful and unjust attacks against him and his family. İmamoğlu said the following in his statement:
"While you have tons of stains on this path that you set out on with a ring, both at home and abroad, for which you cannot even account for a single particle, you are setting your eyes on my wealth, my work and my labor that I have accumulated for three generations; you are violating our honor and dignity, and usurping the future of my children. You are doing all of this with a handful of unqualified people. Everyone involved in this business is dirty."
'Call to members of the judiciary'
İmamoğlu also addressed the members of the judiciary, stating that justice and honest members of the judiciary must stand up.
"I am calling out to the tens of thousands of honest, moral prosecutors and judges of the Great Turkish Judiciary who are passionate about serving their nation. You must stand up and take action against a handful of colleagues who have ruined the Turkish judiciary, disgraced us to the whole world, and destroyed our reputation."
'Call to party politicians'
İmamoğlu also addressed the politicians working in the AK Party and emphasized that the events had reached a point that transcended political parties.
"The process now concerns our nation, starting with your families. The time has come to speak out."
'The nation is great'
Finally, İmamoğlu drew attention to the greatness of the nation and the fact that sovereignty unconditionally belongs to the nation, and said:
"There is no such saying as 'may the snake that does not touch me live a thousand years' in these lands, and there should be no such saying. I wish everyone would raise their voices and say 'even the snake that does not touch me cannot live in these lands'. Our nation is great. Sovereignty belongs to the nation without any reservation or condition."
İmamoğlu's statements had a great impact on the public opinion both in Istanbul and throughout Türkiye. İmamoğlu, who gave the message that the nation has a great responsibility for a Turkey where law and justice operate, stated that he will be following the process.
